Honours BA Textile Design Collections

Four collections flourished from fabric offcuts and waste textiles donated from Harris Tweed Hebrides and Halley Stevensons. The work in this portfolio consist of 3 tweed collections and 1 waxed cotton collection.

Wool was chosen for its natural and sustainable qualities. Using various dying, stitching and fabric manipulation techniques allowed for a rich array of designs.

Collection One

Highland Queen is a sophisticated and luxurious collection showcasing ten designs on Harris Tweed with screen print, stitch and embroidery techniques inspired by a local oil rig decommissioning site in Dundee. The tweed skirts where hand-dyed and printed with tactile and patterned stitch work to create depth and add zing of colour.

The collection is entirely biodegradable.

BLUE

Collection Two

The blue collection investigated verdant mossy growth from Scottish woods and forests. The couch stitching allowed for a contrasting pop of colour! While felting with mohair, wool roving and tweed added an organic tactile element to the designs.

The entire collection is made from natural materials and therefor biodegradable.

SPHAGNUM

Collection Three

The ‘Sphagnum’ collection is an extension of collection two as it explores replicating fungal growth with embroidery, felting and appliqué techniques. Tactility was the main focus of this collection, using wool roving, mohair and cotton yarn that created budding scenes of mossy growth emerging from the tweed and inviting you to touch.

The entire collection is biodegradable.

UTILITY

Waxed Cotton

The local waxed cotton factory, Halley Stevensons, just 0.5 miles away from the studio was an exciting opportunity to research this unconventional material and create a utilitarian duo. During the investigation the historic Black Watch tartan came into my hands. Combining punk tartan with bold and bright block colours composed in a modern and future-classic way.
